Step-by-Step: Passport Box
Your passport to shadow box framing!
The challenge was to create a shadow box that could be opened and closed by the client to access his collection of personal passports accumulated over the years. We chose an Italian walnut burl outer frame, Italian burl cut on its edge for the shadow box with a walnut burl fillet inset around the passport.
The small fillet inner frame was created. Black silk ribbons were wrapped around the backing mat board and the competed small inner frame was measured and masking tape was used to spike its final placement on the bigger blue suede mat board.
Holes were drilled through the back of the mat board for securing the inner frame which will hold the passport collection.
The inner frame is in place and was secured to the blue suede board.
We stitched the inner frame unit to the backing board.
The passports were arranged in the inner frame and tied securely with the black silk ribbon.
The outer frame was placed over the inner unit and measured for an exact fit. The inside of the outer frame was lined in the blue suede mat board.
Two pieces of museum glass were used in the top "lid" of the shadow box. The client's name was added to the under side of the top piece of glass.
The small hinges were added to the top and bottom parts of the shadow box. The wood was routed out so that the hinges were able to lay flat and the box would close perfectly.
We hand pulled nails to attach the museum glass to the lid of the shadow box.
The shadow box is complete! This shows how it looks with the lid open.
