Step-by-Step: Antique Dueling Pistol

Pistol Packin' Framin...! This antique dueling pistol can be removed from this hand crafted shadow box which has hinges inset on the top side.

The challenge was to frame an antique dueling pistol for a client who wanted to display the pistol, but also to be able to remove the pistol from the box periodically. Our frame choice was a Victorian replica dark walnut with rope motif accented with pewter "gun" corners and finished with a silver fillet to accentuate the gun's filagree on the handle. We drew an outline of the pistol on a piece of masonite and drilled holes in it for wooden pegs that would eventually serve as support for the pistol.

The masonite was covered with a gray velvet, folding it around the wooden pegs. The pistol was placed securely on top of the support pegs. The client also had a bullet from the pistol that he wanted included in the final presentation.

We drilled small "starter holes" in the velvet and masonite for placement of the bullet.

An awl was used to expand the holes in the masonite where the bullet was to be placed.

The bullet was sewn securely in place. We purposely did not glue or attach the bullet permanently. That would have damaged the bullet.

This gives you an idea of what the project looked like just before we attached the bullet.

The finished project. We used four "gun metal corners" on the corners of the frame to replicate the metal in the pistol. The client was estatic!
