Step-by-Step: Synagogue Quilt

Our challenge was to block and frame two very large quilts for a local synagogue. Each individual square in both quilts was unique and prepared by the individual families in the synagogue, capturing their family histories, traditions and moments in their lives.

A strip of muslin is sewn around the edge of each quilt as a gusset so that when the quilt is stretched and sewn we are not touching the original quilt. The piece is then flattened and stretched on stretcher bars (or in smaller project, an acid free backing board) that will serve as its inner frame. We used simple push pins to tack the piece to the wooden stretchers, making sure to keep the corners even and square and the fabric flat.

This shows the back side of one quilt. The quilt is tacked to the stretcher bars and will now be stitched.

This is the stitching process. We never glue or use staples to adhere the needlework (quilt) to the stretcher bars. Instead, we employ a time consuming process of stitching and pulling the thread taut, over and over and over.

Debbie is checking the edges of the quilt to make sure they are square and straight on the stretcher bars.

We have cut the plexi glass and Debbie is fitting it into the frame... a Larson Juhl Renaissance gold leaf frame.

Debbie is making sure the edges of the quilt are tucked under and into the frame.

Yvonne is assembling the quilt and frame with is now standing up. She is working at the backside of the piece, using off sets (not brads) to secure the stretched quilt into the frame since the piece is "oversized" and extends beyond the frame in the back. A paper dust cover will be added to the back of the piece and mirror hangers screwed into the back to allow for ease of hanging in the synagogue.

This is one of the two finished quilts which now hang in a place of prominence and love in the synagogue.
