Step-by-Step: Irish Whiskey Bottle
Why drink it when you can frame it?

The challenge was to help the client preserve a memorable, vintage bottle of Irish Whiskey from a company which ceased operations decades ago. The remaining bottles of this classic whiskey are themselves several decades old and are available only on rare occasions and must be imported from Northern Ireland. We were asked to prepare a shadow box to house the bottle... unopened... a shadow box completed with hasp and hinges so he could, if he chose to, have access to the prize inside.

The bottom of the shadow box is a cherry burl frame which we lined in an Irish green suede mat. The top or lid of the box is a from the Palladio collection of hand-carved Italian architectural frames.

The hinges were inset in the top and bottom of the box.

The inside of the lid of the box was stained a natural cherry wood to match the color of the bottom part of the box.

The hasp was added with a small wooden pin to keep it secure.

This view shows how the front of the box looked.

The lid of the box was given a light coat of new gilding to bring out the golden luster of the wood.

We added the inscription of the bottom of two pieces of museum glass for the top lid.

This shows the lid of the box with the "Irish Whiskey" inscription.

The shadow box is almost complete.

Debbie is checking the completed box... with an eye to detail that characterizes everything we do.

A final polishing of the glass in the top lid with alcohol to remove finger prints and smudges.

This is the final piece. Debbie hand sewed a custom green velvet presentation bag with a gold draw string to cover the box... inside that velvet bag and inside that box peeking out of it is the very expensive, very rare bottle of Irish whiskey!
